Song of the Day – February 28, 2012

Song: “Dhoom Again” (from the film Dhoom 2)

Artist: Vishal Dadlani & Dominique Cerejo (lip-synched by Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai)

Country of Origin: India

I’m usually don’t listen to Indian music, but I have found a new interest in it. Particularly, I have become interested in Hindi cinema, or as it is popularly known as Bollywood. Bollywood films remind me of American musical theatre. With its epic ensemble numbers and lavish plot lines, it is hard not be tantalized by its energy. In particular, I came across this song while I was perusing through various Bollywood films. The song is from the movie Dhoom 2, which is obviously the sequel to the movie Dhoom. It stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai as master thieves running away from good cops played by Abhishek Bachman and Uday Chopra. What truly caught my attention was the opening sequence. Roshan starts to dance provocatively to the camera with a humungous ensemble behind him and I immediately sucked into their world. It was captivating and the song matched the energy of dancing in such a perfect way. I see why there are so many musical theatre-esque sequences in Bollywood films; they truly make the film greater.

A little tidbit about Aishwarya: she is considered to be the “most beautiful woman in the world” and the Indian version of Angelina Jolie. Quite interesting, huh? Anyway, my particular favorite was Roshan. I have never seen a man move like Roshan does in the film. His provocative dance moves to the song are too hard to ignore. I guess you can considered this post a mix of film and music rather than just music. Have fun with that!

Song: “Turn Me On”

Artist: David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj

Country of Origin: France/United States

Song of the Day Archive

Yes, here is another David Guetta song. What can I say? This French DJ is blowing up the airwaves and you have to admit are very addicting. I don’t what he does to create such amazing electrified beats, but he manages to do so. No matter if I was in Ghana or USA, his songs were being blasted through the stereos and they still are. I’m not a fan of every song he comes out with. It really depends on which artist he decides to collaborate with on the particular song. They produce magic when it is the right mixture, and I must say he made the right choice in Nicki Minaj. Since Minaj can rap and sing, her flavor is completely right for Guetta’s music. It is obvious that Minaj’s singing vocals have been auto-tuned and synthesized to fit the style of music, but she doesn’t need much help at all. She is a solid vocalist and lyricist, and her pure talent shines through this song. With Guetta’s unique rhythms, this partnership is magical and purely electric.

Also the music video is quite interesting and I’m not sure I understand it fully. It took me to understand Guetta’s music videos, but with time, I will figure it out. Hopefully, all of you may have a better understanding than I do. Anyway…

Song: “Pa’ Bailar (Fiesta Tanguera-Electronica)

Artist: Bajofondo

Country of Origin: Argentina

Song of the Day Archive

Tango music has always intrigued me because it gets people out of their seats and they move in the most seductive gyrations. It is interesting and mesmerizing. I like this song in particular because there is an electric edge to it. It is not your grandmother’s tango music. It is energized for the younger crowd, who may be into the new trend of dance music, but they want to dance traditional tango. This is where music like this comes to play. It mixes those two loves, and gives listeners and dancers the best of both worlds. The other day, I was talking to a friend who spent a semester abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and she said this music was extremely popular there. After hearing this, I had to listen to more music from Argentina. Argentinian mainstream music is quite a delight to listen to and I recommend it for everybody.

I think all of you will be happily enthralled with music from this popular South American country.  I say this because it is always a good thing to get out of your music bubble and listen to new music from around the world. Hopefully, after listening to this track, you will find a tango dance class or club near you where you jump into this dance craze!

Song: “Tonight, I’m Lovin’ You”

Artist: Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris

Country of Origin: USA

Song of the Day Archive

One Friday night in Accra, my friends and I went to the “obruni” (foreigner in Twi) nightclub, BellaRoma. It was definitely poppin’ and there were many people dancing in the club that night. It was great! I was dancing with my friends and then I heard this song. I recognized the voice, but at the time I could not figure it out. The next day, I started YouTube for the song and soon I realized that it was Enrique Iglesias’s new single and may I just say I fell in love with it! It is one of the songs that are so naughty yet so tempting. Everything about this song is raunchy and naughty from the music video to the uncensored lyrics of the song. I’m not sure if it is a song you can blast out of your car since you may offend (or entice) another person, but nevertheless, it is a great club song. This is the type of song that perfectly describes the club nightlife that exists around the world. It is the perfect song to get you motivated to dance and dance more, maybe with someone you are interested. Iglesias knows what music will get people in their sexiest moods and this song is a surefire example. Okay, I think my post is getting way too crazy, so let me stop. LOL

I really enjoy this song and I think it is a lot of fun to listen to. My friends and I would sing this song while getting dressed for that night’s festivities and by the end of our stay in Accra, it became one of our inside jokes and anthems. Crazy, right? Anyway, I think you should listen to the song and you be the judge.

Song: “We Found Love”

Artist: Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris

Country of Origin: USA

To continue the love train from Valentine’s Day yesterday, I decided to post another love song.  It is too easy to post the sappy, slow love songs that gets everyone feeling all romantic, or for some individuals, downright solemn. So I thought the best way to appeal to both groups would be to post a song about losing love, but you still want to dance. Isn’t that like an oxymoron or something; celebrating about losing love? Well anyway, I chose this song because it is wonderfully addicting. Once you’ve listened to the hook, it is immediately stuck in your head. That seems like a pattern in Rihanna’s music where her songs always have a stuck-in-your-head hook and you catch yourself humming the song in the elevator or anywhere you may be.

Personally, I chose the song because of the following reasons: 1) it has become a worldwide hit; 2) the music video was shot in an old conservative farmer’s property in Ireland (which forced Rihanna and her video team off the property) 3) Rihanna is from the Barbados; and 4) it is a very good song that shows Rihanna maturing as an artist. Hence why, it is the Song of the Day! Enjoy!
