Song: “Phoenix”
Artist: Miguel Figueiras
Country of Origin: USA
Today, I thought it would be best to introduce some unknown artists that have fabulous talent. Since I went to an arts-based college in New York City, I was constantly surrounded by talent of all kinds. Then one fabulous summer, I came across this artist, who I happened to work with through our school. His name is Miguel Figueiras and we instantly clicked. He is a recorded music student at our school and he is originally from Miami, Florida. After a few months of getting to know each other, he finally played his music for me and I loved it. This particular song, “Phoenix,” I fell in love with and I wanted to play it for all of you. The song is so humble, earthy and just real. With his honest lyrics and his soulful voice, the song is truthful and hits you on such a deep level. He has immense talent and he is only getting started. I feel very lucky to know him and be able to listen to his breathtaking music.
If you are interested in hearing more of Miguel Figueiras’ music, then you can listen to it on his Tumblr blog and on his Facebook fan page. Click on the links to listen.

Song: “Pa’ Bailar (Fiesta Tanguera-Electronica)
Artist: Bajofondo
Country of Origin: Argentina
Tango music has always intrigued me because it gets people out of their seats and they move in the most seductive gyrations. It is interesting and mesmerizing. I like this song in particular because there is an electric edge to it. It is not your grandmother’s tango music. It is energized for the younger crowd, who may be into the new trend of dance music, but they want to dance traditional tango. This is where music like this comes to play. It mixes those two loves, and gives listeners and dancers the best of both worlds. The other day, I was talking to a friend who spent a semester abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and she said this music was extremely popular there. After hearing this, I had to listen to more music from Argentina. Argentinian mainstream music is quite a delight to listen to and I recommend it for everybody.
I think all of you will be happily enthralled with music from this popular South American country. I say this because it is always a good thing to get out of your music bubble and listen to new music from around the world. Hopefully, after listening to this track, you will find a tango dance class or club near you where you jump into this dance craze!

Song: “Pon de Floor”
Artist: Major Lazer featuring VYBZ Kartel
Country of Origin: USA/United Kingdom/Jamaica
“Wait a minute, doesn’t this song sound familiar?” That is the question I asked myself when I first heard this song. I thought I was slightly losing my mind when I heard it because the song is quite unique and no other song sounded like this. However, I was wrong. I listened to Beyonce’s new song “Run the World (Girls)” and I realized it had the same beat and hook at this song. The mystery was solved and I could move on to the next song, but of course in true SGT fashion, I did not. The song is quite addicting and in a weird way it can hypnotized you. I felt the need to dance in robotic-like moves and for me that is quite weird. Nevertheless, the song is very good and throughout you can hear traditional Jamaican dancehall music streamed through the background. I like the interesting mixture of techno music, repetitive lyrics, and dancehall music. It is different from any other song currently receiving airplay.
Because of uniqueness, this song deserves to be the Song of the Day. In addition to including today’s song, I included Beyonce’s version of the song so you can notice the similarities and differences of each song. Music is ever evolving and mainstream music is pointing in the direction that this song is taking. You better hop onto this trend while you can!

Song: “Love You Like a Love Song”
Artist: Selena Gomez & The Scene
Country of Origin: USA
Do you know those songs that you listen and you’re like, “What is this? Why am I listening to this song?” That is exactly how I felt when I first listened to this song. I usually balk when I hear a song by anyone associated to Disney, but for some reason, I was attracted to the song. With its simple melodies, it had an easygoing nature that is not evident in other songs performed by other Disney stars. It is a song that becomes stuck in your head. Actually, I was walking in lower Manhattan today, casually walking, and then I suddenly found myself humming the chorus to the song. I realized I had been by captured by Selena Gomez’s hypnotizing song and I actually like the song! I think it is interesting and it is not pretentious in any shape or form. It is a good song to listen to, especially when you are in a mellow mood and you want something that is not jarring your brain. Overall, Selena Gomez hit a home run with this fun, simple love song.
I think you should listen to it and I think you will enjoy it. Besides the fact Gomez is a “Disney darling,” she is not a terrible artist. Her songs are catchy and good to listen to. Now lie on your bed, and just listen and relax. Slowly but surely, you will start to hum the melody to yourself and be happily captured by it. It won’t be a bad thing!
Enjoy the Song of the Day!
